New recycle yellow industrial bins coming to Glenefer
« on: February 09, 2012, 12:30:37 PM »
There are (were) 4 yellow recycle bins located in Bin Area 1 which are used to recycle plastic, glass, cubboard and other recycle material.  Unfortunately there are some residents who used these bins do dump the wrong material including food scraps!  Some residents were using the yellow recycle bins simply because the bins were slightly closer and their lids were easier to lift.

This is unacceptable to the managers of Glenefer Gardens and we have most likely been lucky not to receive any warnings from the Brisbane City Council.  Our standard refuge bins are collected twice a week so food scraps have minimal time to create an off smell, however as the recycle bins are only collected once a fortnight, food scraps placed in these bins produced an awful smell and maggots to breed.

To overcome this situation, Troy has been in contact with the Brisbane City Council.  The 4 yellow recycle bins will be replaced with 2 large industrial recycling bins (1 for each bin area) and they will be collected once a week.  Hopefully with an equivalent weighted lid and futher education in relation to signage the dumping of food scraps and the correct usage of these bins shall recommence.

Thank you Brisbane City Council  :)

After our initial phone call, Michael from BCC came out 2 days later to meet with us and talk about the new recycle bins and whether we would qualify.  Mike stated we did and order two (2) new bins (one for each bin area) and they arrived within 10 working days.

We have policing the bin area to ensure residents do
  • put their rubbish in a bin (instead of leaving it beside the bin for the crows to get at), and
  • put their rubbish in the correct bin

The bins have only been operating for a week now however the bin areas are remaining quite clean :)

The recycle bin is quite large but pales in comparison to the normal refuge bins.  The last two photos are of the bin area 1 and 2 respectively.

Two more new recycle yellow industrial bins coming to Glenefer

We have just asked the Brisbane city council for two more yellow bins and their use has been outstanding.  So much so that we had recycle rubbish piled up beside the bins.  We had a choice to double the collection days OR increase our bins so I choose the later which means we don't have to hear as many council trucks coming into our complex :)

Just found out that we can get smaller lids inside our larger lids on our industrial bins so without hesitation I have ordered this for our 6 large industrial bins.  What this means is that for tenants who find the bins too high OR more importantly lids too heavy to lift up, this should ease the burden.
